MIAMI – March 22, 2018 – Today, Pérez Art Museum Miami (PAMM) announced the launch of the PAMM Student Pass, in partnership with Miami-Dade County Public Schools (M-DCPS), which grants free admission to the museum for all M-DCPS Pre-K - 12th grade students.
Schools Superintendent Alberto M. Carvalho and PAMM Director Franklin Sirmans made the historic announcement at a news conference and explained that the Student Pass holders may also bring one adult guest for free with them.
“Education is at the core of what we do and we try to make that a part of every single thing that we do. We call ourselves a 21st century museum because we believe that 21st century museums are dynamic spaces and here to be a part of conversations that are important to our community. It begins with our thought-provoking exhibitions and arts education programs,” said Sirmans.
"I believe strongly that early exposure to art not only opens a child's heart and mind to creativity and ingenuity, but also sharpens critical thinking and other skills that help students learn content across the educational disciplines," said Carvalho.
During the morning announcement, Adler Guerrier, a Haitian-born, Miami-based artist, who graduated from M-DCPS Design and Architecture Senior High (DASH) and who is a PAMM permanent collection artist, also spoke about the importance of an arts education in a young person’s life. Special guests in attendance included PAMM trustees, Miami-Dade School Board members, art teachers as well as students from South Miami K-8 Center, who were led on a tour of the museum by PAMM’s talented teaching artists after the news conference.
To enroll in the program, students should follow the PAMM Student Pass link in the student and/or parent portal located at dadeschools.net, complete and print the online form, and then bring it to the museum. PAMM Student Pass applications also will be available at the museum’s front desk during regular museum hours. A pass card will be provided to the student at the time of the first visit.
PAMM Student Passes expire on August 31st each year. Beginning September 1st, students may re-enroll as long as they are still attending a Miami-Dade County public school.
As the flagship museum for Miami-Dade County for almost 35 years, PAMM believes art has the power to enrich the lives of all people, and is an integral part of the development of all students.

MIAMI – April 19, 2018 – This April, Pérez Art Museum Miami (PAMM) kicks off its third year of Inside|Out, a program funded by the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation, which brings high-quality reproductions of art from the museum’s permanent collection to the community. PAMM issued a call to participants to host this year’s Inside|Out program and received numerous applications from communities all over Miami-Dade County. Five communities were chosen for this year’s round of installations that kick off this spring in the Village of Pinecrest, and Miami Ironside. Over the summer, the reproductions will be presented in the City of Doral, throughout Little Haiti, and in Miller Drive Park.
From Robert Rauschenberg to Vik Muniz, 50 artists from PAMM’s permanent collection will be featured in each season of Inside|Out. Exact locations of each reproduction will be featured on maps available at host locations and at pamm.org/insideout.
Miami is the fourth city to host Inside|Out, a program conceived by the Detroit Institute of Arts in 2010. It proved so successful in Detroit, the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation is providing $2 million over three years to expand Inside|Out to communities across the country, including Charlotte, North Carolina, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, and Akron, Ohio.
Spring Communities (April-May 2018)
Ironside | Situated in Miami's Upper Eastside, a hidden gem in the Palm Grove Historic District, Ironside is a vibrant, mixed-use urban center with over 60 showrooms and shops, galleries and gardens, fitness studios, and pop-up spaces as well as a cafe and restaurant. 15 replicas are visible throughout the Ironside walking district.
Village of Pinecrest | 20 replicas are featured throughout the Pinecrest Gardens, a Village of Pinecrest publicly owned and operated outdoor recreation area acquired in part with funds from the Florida Communities Trust Preservation 2000 Program. Works are also found at the Pinecrest Community Center, Public Library, and the Village of Pinecrest City Hall.
Summer Communities (June-August 2018)
City of Doral | Doral is a thriving city in Miami-Dade County, home to a growing number of industries and diverse communities. We are excited to install 14 works from the Inside|Out collection throughout prominent locations throughout the City of Doral this summer.
Little Haiti | The cultural heart for the Haitian Diaspora in Miami, Inside|Out will display 20 works throughout the neighborhood. Known for its creative global restaurants, colorful street murals, and fruit stands, Little Haiti has a flourishing art scene centered around independent galleries. Complete with record stores and quirky dive bars, Little Haiti is the perfect place to enjoy the collection.
Miller Drive Park | Home to Raices Hispanic Heritage Arts and Culture Center, a multi-cultural and multi-disciplinary arts center founded in May of 1996. The center provides art education services and cultural activities to the community, in addition to cultivating, promoting, celebrating and preserving the traditions found in Latin-American and Caribbean countries, and embracing South Florida’s cultural diversity. A total of 8 replicas will be on view this summer throughout the park.

PAMM celebrates its newest exhibition, william cordova now’s the time: narratives of southern alchemy, with smoke-filled show
WHAT: On Tuesday, April 24, Pérez Art Museum Miami (PAMM) will celebrate the anticipated opening of its newest exhibition, william cordova now’s the time: narratives of southern alchemy, by releasing smoke signals from the museum’s rooftop.
This unique and smoke-filled art installation, titled smoke signals (12.29, cinco en sombra de la tarde, reté fo), is brought to life by celebrated Miami-based artist william cordova. Referencing rituals and ancient forms of communication, the work is meant to illustrate purification, transformation, energy, and healing.
As the kick-off to the opening weekend of his eponymous exhibition, cordova will release the signals from the top of the building at 11:30am.
Opening celebrations for the exhibition will continue throughout the week, and include an art talk with william cordova, artist Leslie Hewitt, and PAMM Associate Curator María Elena Ortiz on Thursday, April 26 at 7pm. The group will speak on the various intersecting narratives Cordova's works is informed by such as architecture, cinema, literature and music.
About william cordova now’s the time: narratives of southern alchemy william cordova now’s the time: narratives of southern alchemy is the first extensive museum survey of cultural practitioner william cordova (b. 1969, Lima; lives in Miami, Lima, and New York). It presents a selection of works embodying the three main themes that have inspired the work of this celebrated Miami artist for decades: transmission, alchemy, and transcendence. In his nationally and internationally recognized drawings, sculptures, installations, and collaborative projects, cordova collapses linear concepts of time and history to address contemporary notions of displacement. He extensively researches symbols and artifacts from different cultures and times, ignoring the boundaries between the past and the present. Then, he uses ephemeral and precarious materials to create elegant works that challenge traditional Western typologies. Striving to create a flexible and critical space for the understanding of our contemporary moment, he builds bridges between separate narratives, such as architecture, cinema, literature, and music. This exhibition will be accompanied by the artist’s museum catalogue, available for purchase at PAMM Shop.

MIAMI – May 15, 2018 – Pérez Art Museum Miami (PAMM) has named Douglas C. Evans to the executive team as the museum’s first Chief Development Officer. Evans’ dedication and passion for the arts, along with his developmental leadership experience across the U.S. make him an incredible asset to the museum. A key new position within the organization, Evans will be responsible for overseeing the museum’s fundraising efforts.
"I'm excited to join the team at PAMM during a very dynamic time for the cultural community,” said Evans. “The chance to utilize my years of operational and management experience in not only Miami, but the South Florida region, will benefit the organization overall as we work together to grow PAMM."
Prior to this appointment, Evans was Executive Director of the Stamford Center for the Arts in Stamford, Connecticut. Evans has also served in leadership positions across the United States including most recently the Fashion Scholarship Fund in New York City, President of the Society for the Preservation of the Great American Songbook and Chairman of the World Affairs Council in Palm Beach. He was the Founding President of Classical South Florida, 89.7FM, 90.7FM, 101.9FM in the Palm Beaches and 88.7FM in Naples, Marco Island and Ft. Myers. Evans held the position of Chief Operating Officer of Nederlander Worldwide Entertainment and President of Broadway China Ventures, a division of the Nederlander Organization charged with opening offices in Beijing and Shanghai and creating a network of 25 theaters nationwide in mainland China, Hong Kong, and Macao.
In addition to his work with major foundations including the Heinz and Wallace, Evans formerly a registered lobbyist in the state of Connecticut is considered to be a leader in government relations for support of the arts and has successfully secured arts funding from both federal and state government. He is a Founding Director of the Connecticut Arts Alliance, past Governor and member of the Executive Committee of the League of American Theatres and Producers, a Tony Awards Voter, a founding member of the Independent Presenters Network and a former Director of the National Alliance for Musical Theatre. Evans was presented with a Renaissance Award from the Greater Hartford Chamber of Commerce Downtown Council for his efforts in working towards the revival of downtown Hartford.

MIAMI – May 21, 2018 – On Monday, May 28, Pérez Art Museum Miami (PAMM) will host its annual Memorial Day BBQ on the terrace overlooking Biscayne Bay. From 1-4pm, enjoy live music by garage rock band SunGhosts, barbecue food and refreshments for sale on the terrace, complimentary popcorn with museum admission, art-making with PAMM teaching artists, and a special appearance by Coast Guard Air Station Miami. Inside the iconic museum, explore newly opened exhibitions by Meiro Koizumi: Battlelands, The World’s Game: Fútbol and Contemporary Art, william cordova now’s the time: narratives of southern alchemy, and more.
The lively daytime celebration will kick off PAMM’s third year of participation in Blue Star Museums, a collaboration among the National Endowment for the Arts, Blue Star Families, the Department of Defense, and more than 2,000 museums across America to offer free admission to the nation’s active duty military personnel and their families from Memorial Day through Labor Day. The national summer initiative compliments PAMM’s year-round policy of extending free admission to U.S. military with identification. With this program, PAMM is able to give complimentary admission to active duty military personnel, veterans and family members.
PAMM’s Memorial Day BBQ is open to the public. Entry to PAMM’s terrace is free. BBQ and refreshments available for purchase. Complimentary popcorn with museum admission and for active duty military personnel and veterans.

MIAMI – May 29, 2018 – Pérez Art Museum Miami (PAMM) presents Christo and Jeanne-Claude: Surrounded Islands, Biscayne Bay, Greater Miami, Florida, 1980-83: A Documentary Exhibition, an exhibition of archival materials and artworks around the renowned artists’ site-specific 1983 installation, Surrounded Islands, in Miami’s Biscayne Bay. On view from October 5, 2018 through February 17, 2019, the exhibition commemorates the 35th anniversary of Surrounded Islands—an anniversary that also coincides with the founding of PAMM’s predecessor institution, Center for Fine Arts. The history of Surrounded Islands is inseparable from PAMM’s origins, and the exhibition reinforces the idea that the museum’s evolution is inextricable from the development of Miami as both a city and an artistic hub.
In May of 1983, Christo and Jeanne-Claude encircled 11 uninhabited islands in Miami’s Biscayne Bay with 6.5 million square feet of floating, pink, woven polypropylene fabric. For two weeks, the results harmonized with water, sky, and foliage, creating a stunning chromatic medley in blue, green, pink, and turquoise. Despite its short duration, Surrounded Islands made a lasting impact on the city’s cultural history, marking the birth of Miami’s international artistic profile while serving as inspiration for untold numbers of people across the entire spectrum of the South Florida community.
Surrounded Islands was an endeavor of epic ambition, and the upcoming exhibition will present the entertaining and inspiring history by which this project became a reality. It is a narrative of empowerment, exemplifying the idea that lone individuals are capable of marshaling large civic forces to bring their dreams to fruition—that with determination, willpower, and compelling vision, anything is possible.
“All of our projects are like expeditions,” said Christo. “The story of each is unique. The Pérez Art Museum Miami exhibition will include drawings, collages, photographs and other components of Surrounded Islands that provide a window into the project—from its conception to realization.”
The exhibition at PAMM is an adaptation of an earlier exhibition focused on Surrounded Islands, which traveled through Germany, France, the Netherlands, Spain, Switzerland, Belgium, and Japan between 1984 and 1991. Like its precursor, the show will be of sweeping depth and breadth, comprising approximately 50 drawings and collages, a large-scale model of the bay and its islands, hundreds of photographs and documents, several photomurals, and physical components of the project. This extensive cache of materials attests to the profound challenges that the artist duo encountered over the course of three years (1980-1983) as they worked to realize their epic vision, overcoming formidable logistical and governmental obstacles with the help of hundreds of paid workers. The iteration at PAMM seeks to go beyond simply commemorating the original Surrounded Islands project and serve as a time capsule that captures and evokes a consequential time in Miami’s history.
Surrounded Islands had a strong impact on Miami, stimulating the growth of the local art community and encouraging the city to recognize the ways in which Miami could become a significant center for contemporary art. In a broader sense, the project had a unifying effect on the city as a whole, prompting residents to come together in celebration of the natural beauty that surrounds them. The project exemplifies art’s potential in fostering civic unity, an idea that Miami remains intensely invested in—an idea upon which PAMM is largely premised.

MIAMI, FL – June 4, 2018 – Pérez Art Museum Miami (PAMM) presents El hombre con el hacha y otras situaciones breves (2014/2017), a large-scale installation by Argentine-born, New York-based artist Liliana Porter. Featuring hundreds of objects and fragments of various scales—from tiny figures and miniature train sets to a life-size piano that has been broken into pieces—the work is the most ambitious installation by the artist to date. A form of “retrospective” of Porter’s work, it includes characters and scenes that have reappeared within the artist’s prints, paintings, photos, installations, and films throughout the last several decades. Originally produced in 2014 and reinstalled for the 2017 Venice Biennial, this piece was recently acquired by PAMM and will be adapted specifically for one of the museum’s project galleries, where it will remain on view from June 8 to September 29, 2018.
A pivotal artist within the history of Argentinian conceptual art, Porter has been creating works since the 1960s that deconstruct our understanding of representation. Expanding upon notions of the multiple, her practice has included prints, photographs, assemblages, installations, films, and recently several theater productions. Porter’s work often explores the concept of time and how the line between reality and imagination can become blurred or fragile as memories mix with everyday experiences. She sees the imprint of time recorded not just in our memories but also within the physical objects, images, and books that feature in her work. Using toys and other found objects sourced from popular culture and domestic contexts, Porter engages humor and presents playful situations that draw her viewers into deeper conversations about meaning and representation.
Spread across multiple white bases of varying levels, El hombre con el hacha y otras situaciones breves (The man with the axe and other brief situations) presents numerous vignettes involving figures, toys, broken furniture, amongst other textured materials and objects. The dramatic difference in scale between certain elements, which range from the miniscule to the gigantic, plays with perspective and perception in unusual ways, inviting the viewer to walk around the piece and closely examine the kaleidoscope of objects on display.
The piece’s title, “The man with the axe and other brief situations”, refers to a tiny plastic figurine of a man wielding an axe that is positioned prominently near the front-center of the installation. Within the scene, his tiny axe appears to have created a deep cut in the white ground beneath him and a large pile of broken materials. This “brief situation” is one of many that appear throughout the installation, creating a landscape of mini-narrative scenes across this expansive stage-structure that are at once humorous, odd, and philosophical.

MIAMI, FL – June 26, 2018 – Pérez Art Museum Miami (PAMM) presents Pablo Picasso’s (1881-1973)Femme à la montre (1932), a portrait of one of the most revered subjects in the artist’s paintings—his muse and lover Marie-Therese Walter. The work is a classic example of the Modern Master’s highly prized works from 1932, a particularly fruitful and pivotal year for the artist that was marked by his first major retrospective at the Galeries Georges Petit, Paris.
“We are pleased to bring this extraordinary painting to Miami where it will be a highlight for viewers throughout the summer,” said PAMM Director Franklin Sirmans. “We are grateful for the opportunity from lender Emily Fisher Landau to present this important painting. In 1985, when the museum was in its infancy, as the Center for Fine Arts, we hosted an exhibition of works by Picasso. In line with our coming 35th Anniversary, this important work by Picasso is also a reminder of our past exhibition history.”
On view at PAMM from July 4 to October 16, 2018, the Miami community will have a unique opportunity to engage with the work of one of the most influential artists of the 20th century, which is part of the museum’s commitment to presenting modern art to its audience.
Born in Malaga, Spain, Picasso created a distinctive look and line within his paintings and drawings during the early 1900s while living in Barcelona and later in Paris, where he settled for good in 1904. From the beginning of the 20th century until his death in 1973, the artist continued to appropriate and invent new styles. In the true spirit of Modernism, he constantly challenged himself and his contemporaries to create something new. Influenced by African art that he encountered in Paris, Picasso paved the way to the birth of Cubism and played an integral role in the foundation of Surrealism, while always working from a representational image—something tangible or recognizable.
The voluptuous and sensual images of Walter that Picasso created between 1927 and 1937 mark a departure from his Cubist phase, in which images of figures were contorted as if seen from several angles at once. While Femme à la montre portrays the sitter frontal and more or less clothed—unlike many of his other nude depictions of her—the exposed breast hints at the characteristically sensual quality of many of his other portraits of Walter, also known as his “Golden Muse.” The softness of her figure and the hardness of the chair in which she sits are synthesized into one full image, while the unmistakably clear eye that gazes out at the viewer suggest the inner life of a sitter who was also the artist’s lover and muse.

MIAMI, FL – July 24, 2018 – Pérez Art Museum Miami (PAMM) presents Grids: A Selection of Paintings by Lynne Golob Gelfman, a collection of approximately 25 paintings by Miami-based artist Lynne Golob Gelfman. The most comprehensive show by Gelfman to date, the exhibition will showcase paintings the artist has produced over the last two decades, as well as examples of early works from the late 1960s and early 70s—the majority of which have never been seen publicly before. Interested in exploring various forms of mark-making and patterning techniques, Gelfman produces in series, using oil, acrylic and flash paint on both canvas and wood. Examples from five of her series will be on view as part of the exhibition from September 15, 2018 to April 21, 2019.
One of Miami’s most esteemed abstract artists, Gelfman utilizes methods that play with surfaces in diverse ways, with certain series involving staining into the canvas, others creating reflections in gold and silver, others channeling drips of paint in angular lines down the front of her paintings. A self-described trickster, Gelfman is trained in traditional modernist aesthetics, which she honors in her work but consistently subverts with the intention to disobey rules and conventions. The most visible example of this is her decision to paint the backs of her canvases. This allows the established grid pattern she creates to become disrupted—distorted —as the paint bleeds through fabric and appears on the front of the canvas.
Gelfman credits her move to Miami in 1972 as the motivation for this technique. Longing for New York City, she came to the realization that the dark, urban settings of her previous paintings felt out of place in the tropical light of Miami. Following a fortuitous accident upon which she looked at the back of a grid painting and observed a resulting “bleached-out light” effect—an effect much more in line with her new Miami surroundings—Gelfman began consciously turning the back to the front.
Since then Miami's unique environment has continually influenced Gelfman's work: the patterns and details of its tropical flora and fauna, the textures of the sea and bleaching effects of sunlight, and in several series elements taken from its urban infrastructure and architecture. For example, her oil and sand series references the curling, linear metal work used in many working-class neighborhoods in Miami to secure windows and gates. Meanwhile, her between paintings transform the grid of chain-link fences, often used to aggressively divide urban spaces into shimmering, transparent patterns that recall the movement of sunlight on the sea.
Gelfman’s work is also reflective of her time spent in Colombia, where she has lived and worked periodically throughout her career, and during where she has investigated indigenous textile and basket weaving techniques. Series that evidence these influences include lines, where invisible horizontal markings interact with applications of dripping paint that move vertically down the surface, creating a patterning that recalls the irregular grids of textiles. The thru series additionally recalls weaving patterns, through its use of repeating triangle and square forms. She began this series in the 1970s but has returned to it in recent years, producing works at varying scales and formats.
Gelfman’s alterations of the grid show this geometric and rational form as quite vulnerable, as easily susceptible to dissolution and manipulation. The artist has described this aspect of her work as referencing the rapid disintegrations and manipulations of values and ethics within our contemporary society.
A Miami resident since 1972, Gelfman has had more than 40 solo shows. Her first solo show was a prize awarded by Miami’s Metropolitan Museum and Art Center in 1974, then under the leadership of Arnold Lehman. Since then, Gelfman has exhibited nationally and internationally in galleries and museums. Her work is also a part of many public and private collections, including Pérez Art Museum Miami. For the last 15 years, she has developed art projects with inner-city children at the Barnyard, Coconut Grove.

PAMM Corporate Honors will be awarded to Funding Arts Network and Goya Foods of Florida, with the event’s main program highlighting the intersection of art and fashion in Miami’s growing economy. MIAMI – January 18, 2018 – On February 17, 2018, Pérez Art Museum Miami (PAMM) will welcome arts supporters and the PAMM Ambassadors for African American Art to the museum for Art + Soul, an evening celebrating the fifth anniversary of the PAMM Fund for African American Art. This event also marks the one-year anniversary since the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation provided a matching grant challenge that doubles donors’ gifts and ensures that works by African American artists will always be represented in the museum’s permanent collection.
“We are proud to be a museum with a collection that is reflective of our diverse Miami community,” said PAMM Director Franklin Sirmans. “Through the Fund and this annual event, we are able to continue to shape the institution’s collection of contemporary African American art and support its growth for generations to come.”
This year’s celebration will unveil the fund’s most recent acquisition, a new painting by Tschabalala Self, and will offer special evening programs in three parts. Knight Foundation will match dollar to dollar all of the proceeds generated by the event to help support the fund.
The Dinner | cocktails 7pm, dinner 8pm: The evening will begin with an intimate cocktail hour and seated dinner in Paresky Hall, with introductory remarks made by ABC Local 10 Anchor and Reporter Neki Mohan. Dinner guests will also have access to the Reveal and the Celebration. Tickets: $1,000 per person.
The Reveal | 9-10pm: The celebration will continue with a reveal of the fund’s most recent acquisition in the presence of the artist Tschabalala Self, with remarks by artist and scholar David C. The PAMM Fund for African American Art was established in 2013 with a $1 million donation, funded equally by Jorge M. Pérez and the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation, for the purchase of contemporary art by African American artists for the museum’s permanent collection. Through the Fund, the museum first acquired works by Al Loving, Faith Ringgold, and Xaviera Simmons, which joined other significant pieces in the museum’s collection by African American artists such as Leonardo Drew, Sam Gilliam, Rashid Johnson, Lorna Simpson, James Van Der Zee, Carrie Mae Weems, Kehinde Wiley, and Purvis Young. MIAMI – January 29, 2017 – Pérez Art Museum Miami (PAMM) will host its fourth annual Art of the Party, the museum’s largest fundraiser event of the year, on March 17, 2018. Art of the Party 2018 will honor Teresita Fernández, one of today’s leading contemporary artists, and philanthropist Patricia M. Papper. The event, presented by Valentino, will feature three exclusive guest experiences conceptualized by Lee Brian Schrager, as well as culinary collaborations by STARR Catering Group and Chef Michelle Bernstein. Bringing together cultural philanthropists, artists, civic leaders and arts supporters, the evening will showcase the world-class museum’s unique architecture and celebrate Miami’s flagship art museum. Funds from Art of the Party directly support the museum’s robust arts education program, the largest program of its kind outside the Miami-Dade County school system.

Born and raised in Miami, Teresita Fernández is a leading artist admired for her public sculptures and installations that allude to studies of perception, landscape, and minimalism. A graduate of Florida International University, Fernández made some of her early works in Miami, and her career exemplifies the tenacity and virtuosity of artists that originate from Miami. She is an activist that actively promotes diversity in American museum institutions. Several of her works belong to PAMM’s collection including Fire (America) 5 (2017), currently on view as part of On the Horizon: Contemporary Cuban Art from the Jorge M. Pérez Collection. Fernández’s Eclipse (2002), was exhibited as part of PAMM’s previous permanent collection display, Routes of Influence. In 2019, and in collaboration with the Phoenix Art Museum, PAMM will be honored to present the first major retrospective of Fernández’s work.
Born and raised in South Florida, Patricia M. Papper is an arts advocate and philanthropist, as well as a longtime supporter of PAMM. She was a founding member of the museum in 1983, when it was the Center for the Fine Arts, and has been involved with the institution ever since. Throughout the years, she has served on the board of trustees—including serving as president for a decade, supported many exhibitions such as Basquiat: The Unknown Notebooks, donated works of art and funds for the acquisition of art, participated in several committees, and has been a part of major fundraising events such as the gala and Corporate Luncheon.

MIAMI – February 8, 2018 – Pérez Art Museum Miami (PAMM) announced today that Naiomy Guerrero has been awarded the museum’s inaugural Diversifying Art Museum Leadership Initiative (DAMLI) Curatorial Fellowship. This two-year fellowship, made possible by the Walton Family Foundation and the Ford Foundation, is offered to students from historically underrepresented groups in the curatorial and museum profession who have recently completed graduate level studies in art history or a related field. The fellow will have the opportunity to work on at least two major projects at PAMM and will generate at least four written pieces for the curatorial and education departments. The fellow will also work to initiate at least two new community partnerships in pursuit of deeper community engagement in exhibitions, programs, and/or collections.

Guerrero has a B.A. in Art History from Depauw University and has begun graduate research and coursework towards a Master’s in Social Thought. The founding editor of the blog GalleryGirl.nyc (2016-present), she has also contributed to several publications and served as a panelist and speaker at functions related to art and writing. Over the course of her two-year fellowship, she will work with PAMM’s curatorial and education staff in all phases of public program development, symposiums, time-based art exhibition development, community outreach, and audience research and evaluations.

The renowned and prestigious Pérez Art Museum Miami (PAMM) is partnering with WPLG-TV Local 10 for its first eARTh Day Art Contest. The museum, located at 1103 Biscayne Boulevard, will display the original works of art of the ten contest finalists. South Florida art teachers and students, from grades K-12, are invited to create an original painting or sculpture that incorporates themes and elements inspired by nature.
“PAMM has been the site for several conversations related to the intersection of art and the environment,” said Director Franklin Sirmans. “Our own building has been internationally recognized as an example of leadership in sustainable energy and environmental design. We are excited to work with Local10 and the many talented art students in this community on this outreach initiative with art as a catalyst for important conversations.”
To enter, art teachers, representing their students and schools, must complete an entry form and submit a photo of the original artwork online at local10.com. Only one entry permitted per school. Entry deadline is 11:59 p.m. on March 11, 2018.
Local 10 will choose ten finalists and their work will be displayed at PAMM from April 16-22. Viewer votes will select the winning entry from among the finalists. The winning school will be announced on Earth Day, Sunday April 22, on Local 10 News and will receive $4,500 in art supplies for their school’s art department.

WHAT: To celebrate the opening of its newest exhibition, The Words of Others: León Ferrari and Rhetoric in Times of War, Pérez Art Museum Miami (PAMM) has joined forces with local community figures, artists, and actors to host a live public reading of Argentinian artist León Ferrari’s 1967 publication “The Words of Others” on Thursday, February 15 from 1-9pm.
Written during the Vietnam War, The Words of Others was composed as an extensive dialogue among various characters, including President Lyndon B. Johnson, Adolf Hitler, Pope Paul VI, and God. By means of a cut-and-paste exercise of quotations selected from history books, the Bible, newspapers, and magazines, the work associates the atrocities of war and the representations of redemption and punishment in religion.
WHO: During eight hours, a cast of 33 readers will give a contemporary voice to the text. Some of the readers participating include:

About The Words of Others: León Ferrari and Rhetoric in Times of War
Originally organized as part of Pacific Standard Time: LA/LA (2017–18), an initiative of the Getty Foundation, this exhibition presents works by León Ferrari (b. 1920, Buenos Aires; d. 2013, Buenos Aires)—one of the most emblematic and provocative figures in 20th-century Latin American art. With a particular emphasis on the literary collages that played a central element of Ferrari’s practice, such as The Words of Others, this exhibition presents works that remain unpublished or have experienced minimal circulation as limited editions or sketchbooks. It offers a new perspective on Ferrari’s work while exploring the aesthetic forms of political intervention that emerged in Latin America in the 1960s. This profoundly contemporary project examines the obscenity of war, the ways the media represents conflict, and the role of political and religious discourse in the expansion of Western culture.

MIAMI – February 21, 2018 – Saturday night at Pérez Art Museum Miami’s Art + Soul Fifth Anniversary Celebration of the PAMM Fund for African American Art, nearly 350 guests attended the historic evening in support of the Fund. The evening kicked off with an intimate dinner in Paresky Hall emceed by Local 10 Anchor Neki Mohan. Alberto Ibargüen, president and CEO of the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation, welcomed supporters and announced that Knight Foundation would match every dollar raised this year in an effort to help PAMM create an incredible collection of African American Art. Throughout the evening, more than $250,000 was raised towards the match—more than $500,000 total, ensuring that works by African American artists will always be represented in PAMM’s permanent collection for generations to come.
“We are thrilled to see how this Fund has evolved and grown over the past five years. By offering a match, we hope this encourages the Miami community to contribute to our shared goal of building a collection of great art by African American artists that will inspire and connect us all,” said Alberto Ibargüen, president and CEO of Knight Foundation.
During the evening’s celebration, PAMM Director Franklin Sirmans also revealed the fund’s newest acquisition, a painting by Tschabalala Self—a renowned 26-year-old female artist whose work celebrates the Black female body in contemporary culture.
“We are continually grateful for Alberto and Jorge’s contributions to this Fund, which grants us the incredible opportunity to continue to build a great collection of contemporary African American art that our audiences can enjoy for generations to come, and we are overjoyed to add Tschabalala’s work to our collection this year.”
Self said a few words about her work, Chopped Cheese (2017), which explores the environments of identity politics by focusing specifically on bodegas—public storefronts that serve as a hallmark of lower-income Black and Latinx communities throughout New York City. Known for her collage and assemblage paintings, Self’s work examines contemporary perspectives on femininity, race, and gender.
The lively event also featured special musical performances by Cellist Guy Michel, songstress TXS, and DJ She-J Hercules. The program also included art historian and artist David C. Driskell, inaugural Art + Soul Dinner Host Deryl McKissack, and celebrity chef Amaris Jones. Notable guests included Knight Foundation VP/Arts Victoria Rogers, Director of Arts Bahia Ramos, and Director of Journalism LaSharah Bunting; Mayor of Tallahassee Andrew Gillum; songwriter and producer Rico Love; playwright and actor Tarell Alvin McCraney; former White House Social Secretary for President Obama Desirée Rogers; and PAMM collection artists José Bedia, Adler Guerrier, and Tomás Esson.
The PAMM Fund for African American Art was established in 2013 with the donation of a $1 million grant, funded equally by Jorge M. Pérez and the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation, for the purchase of contemporary art by African American artists for the museum’s permanent collection. Through the Fund, the museum first acquired works by Al Loving, Faith Ringgold, and Xaviera Simmons. These works joined other significant PAMM collection objects by artists such as Leonardo Drew, Sam Gilliam, Rashid Johnson, Lorna Simpson, James Van Der Zee, Carrie Mae Weems, Kehinde Wiley, and Purvis Young, among others.

MIAMI – March 12, 2018 – Pérez Art Museum Miami (PAMM) presents The World’s Game: Fútbol and Contemporary Art, an exhibition dedicated to the intersection of art and the most popular sport in the world—fútbol. On view from April 13 through September 2, The World’s Game: Fútbol and Contemporary Art is an art-based exhibition on the subject of soccer, or fútbol, and its interactions with societies around the world. Planned to overlap with the 2018 World Cup, the exhibition will explore how the sport has stimulated artists to reflect upon its implications on society. The first exhibition of its kind in Miami, it engages with the city’s special passion for the global game.
The exhibition will feature 50 works of art ranging from video and photography to painting and sculpture by more than 30 artists including Andy Warhol, Vik Muniz, Maria Lassnig, Kehinde Wiley, Miguel Calderón, Robin Rhode, Taryn Simon, Quisqueya Henriquez, Antoni Muntadas, Melanie Smith, Hank Willis Thomas, and others.
“The subject of fútbol has been universally addressed by contemporary artists for quite some time. Many of them engage with the game as a form of common connection between people around the world—a connection that is exceptionally evident here in South Florida, where a widespread passion for fútbol is vibrantly palpable,” said PAMM Director Franklin Sirmans. “This exhibition highlights the intersection of popular culture and fine art and presents the art of the game as much as the game of art. As Miami prepares to welcome David Beckham and his partners’ new Major League Soccer (MLS) franchise, we also highlight the fact that many of Miami’s most fervent fans root for teams far away from their hometown.”
Played regularly by more than 240 million people in more than 200 countries, fútbol is considered the most popular sport in the world. PAMM seeks to present the many forms of art connected to and inspired by the game of soccer, in which social, cultural, and political issues of identity, nationalism, globalism, and mass spectacle play out visually. The geographic range represented in PAMM’s exhibition reflects the global reach of the sport, with artists hailing from Argentina, Ghana, Italy, Mexico, and Brazil, in addition to several Miami–based artists.
Works featured in The World’s Game: Fútbol and Contemporary Art include Kehinde Wiley’s portrait of the renowned Cameroonian striker Samuel Eto’o, who won the African Player of the Year award a record four times. Wiley’s created the portrait on the occasion of the 2010 World Cup in South Africa. The exhibition will also feature LA-based artist Chris Beas’ photo-based paintings of former Manchester United stars Brian Kidd, George Best, and Sir Bobby Charlton. Beas grew up loving the British team from afar in Los Angeles, and his designs are evidence of how children continue to find heroes in faraway places.
Taryn Simon’s series of large format photographs, Paperwork and the Will of Capital, centers on images of floral arrangements recreated to resemble the centerpieces that accompanied the singing of major political treaties, agreements, contracts, and decrees. The exhibition at PAMM will include an image dedicated to FIFA’s 2014 agreement to outlaw third-party ownership of soccer players’ economic rights.
Other works allow artists and fans to play out their fantasies. In a film by Miguel Calderon, Mexico trounces Brazil 17-0—an unprecedented feat that is accompanied by celebrations on a national scale. For Melanie Smith, born in England but a resident of Mexico City since 1989, Mexico’s cultural fabric lies at the heart of her film installation, named after the country’s largest and most famous arena, the Azteca. Built for the politically-charged 1968 Olympics, the Azteca has hosted some of the game’s most memorable triumphs and defeats.
Another famous stadium has a starring role in a work by Nelson Leirner that features Brazil’s largest and most popular field, the Maracana. Leirner has transformed the audience, filling the stands with hundreds of small statuettes of religious and pop culture figures from across the globe. Battalions of Buddhas are placed alongside legions of Roman cavalry and troops of Disney cartoon characters. The figure of Jesus himself embraces the scene, lining the arena walls with outstretched arms. Within the context of a sporting event, these characters have the opportunity to play strikingly different roles. Maracana is a commentary on the futile nature of the World Cup today, evoking the threats facing this institution, which is at odds with the imperialism of military power. At the same time, Maracana addresses secular culture’s transformation into modern day religious identity.
“How do you spell Pele?” a Sunday Times journalist inquired of a fan after the 1970 football final against Italy. “G-O-D” was the answer. Such was the legend Warhol took on in his 1978 portrait of the Brazilian soccer superstar Pele. Throughout the 1970s, Warhol attached himself to ubiquitous figures in pop culture, fascinated with their societal influence. In 1978, Warhol teamed up with art collector Richard Weisman to create his Athlete Series, featuring 10 famed athletes that together represent the broad spectrum of American sports culture, including boxer Muhammad Ali and basketball player Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, among others.
Amidst record yearly transfer fees and the international corporate stakes, it is sometimes easy to forget that the game is most often played for fun. Isolating some of the more absurd aspects of players “diving” as they attempt to gain a penalty or an unfair advantage, Paul Pfeiffer’s video, Caryatid (2003), is sure to provoke laughs. Likewise, Antoni Muntadas highlights the unabashed joy involved in playing the sport in a film titled Celebration (2009), which presents footage of nothing but the immediate aftermath of goals scored.
The late Austrian artist Maria Lassnig made colorful expressionist paintings of the human body that depict average human beings with brutal honesty rather than the models of advertising. In effect, she created surreal psychological portraits of interior lives, such as her depiction of a footballer who seems to have lost his shorts, which will be on view as a part of this exhibition.
The show also highlights works by several Miami-based artists including Alexandre Arrechea, Adler Guerrier, Jamilah Sabur, Sinuhe Vega Negrin, and Bhakhti Baxter. The celebrated Miami filmmaker Gaspar González will also create a new film about the game as it is played in Miami, from pickup to the pros.

The Words of Others: León Ferrari andRhetoric in Times of War February 15–August 12, 2018
Originally organized as part of Pacific Standard Time: LA/LA (2017–18), an initiative of the Getty Foundation, this solo exhibition of the Argentinian artist León Ferrari (b. 1920, Buenos Aires; d. 2013, Buenos Aires) focuses on his influential practice from the 1960s to the 1980s. With a particular emphasis on his literary collages—works that incorporate text excerpts from different sources that are reassembled to create an altogether new message—the exhibition features the first full live reading of his seminal 1967 publication Palabras ajenas (The Words of Others)—an important Vietnam-era anti-war piece written in the form of a dramatic script.
Palabras ajenas was Ferrari’s first literary collage, composed as an extensive dialogue among various characters, including President Lyndon B. Johnson, Adolf Hitler, Pope Paul VI, and God. By means of a cut-and-paste exercise, the work associates the atrocities of the Vietnam War, the horrors of Nazism, and the representations of redemption and punishment in religion through quotations selected from history books, literature, the Bible, newspapers, and magazines. The result is a chorus of contemporary voices that recite and interpret the text, which will be read in full in PAMM’s auditorium on February 15 from 1 to 9pm.

Meiro Koizumi: Battlelands March 23–August 19, 2018
Pérez Art Museum Miami is pleased to present a newly-commissioned video work by Meiro Koizumi (b. 1976, Gunma, Japan; lives in Tokyo). Working primarily in video and performance, Koizumi’s works investigate the boundaries between the private and the public, between authentic and staged emotions. They often present everyday situations transformed into sites of tension, involving conflicts between duty and desire. In this new work, Koizumi is working for the first time with non-Japanese subjects, engaging United States veterans from the Iraq and Afganistan wars. Five veterans recount traumatic experiences during these past military conflicts, while wearing body-cams that record images of their current domestic spaces and everyday landscapes in the US. The video poetically articulates how these difficult memories of war continually mix with daily life for these individuals, creating emotional, psychological battlelands.

The World’s Game: Fútbol and Contemporary Art is an art-based exhibition on the subject of soccer, or fútbol, and its interactions with societies around the world. Planned to overlap with the 2018 FIFA World Cup, the exhibition will explore how the sport has stimulated artists to reflect upon its implications on society. With approximately thirty artists working in video, photography, painting, and sculpture, the aim of this exhibition is to create an experience where the viewer/spectator can use a universal theme to engage with the work of contemporary artists from around the world. Through visual art, PAMM seeks to present the art form of soccer—a place where social, cultural, and political issues of identity, nationalism, globalism, and mass spectacle play out vibrantly. The exhibition celebrates the commonality of human experience through a sport that has been one of the few common languages worldwide.

william cordova now’s the time: narratives of southern alchemy April 27–October 7, 2018
Including a selection of older and newer works, this exhibition presents an overview of the artist’s practice focusing on a series of concepts central to the artist such as transcendence, alchemy, and transmission in PAMM’s Mary M. and Sash A. Spencer Focus Gallery. Early on in his career cordova worked with the figure of Túpac Amaru both in music and language. cordova has been significantly influenced by the performer and activist Túpac Amaru Shakur. The famed rapper was named after 18th century Andean revolutionary, Túpac Amaru II, who was killed after leading an indigenous uprising against Spanish rule in modern-day Peru. In his works, Cordova often creates intersections between these two figures, pointing to their similarities and important roles in affecting the contemporary artist’s worldview. The two Túpacs embody notions of activism, collaboration, and political transgression. Other works presented in the exhibition deal with the impact that Third Cinema and Afro-Peruvian poetry and music has had on cordova’s practice. Combining different motifs into one drawing or sculpture, Cordova considers how vernacular cultures specific to the South of the United States, the Andean region in South America, and the Caribbean are essential as strategies to transcend political, racial, economic, and cultural oppression. Cordova, who began making art in the streets as a form of activism while attending Miami Central High School, will create two new works to be placed outside the museum. Collectively, these works illuminate cordova’s commitment to current cultural intersections in relation to alternative narratives, ritual, language, and other commonalities, as a way to encourage a new transcendental space.
william cordova now's the time: narratives of southern alchemy will be accompanied by the artist’s first museum catalogue with an essay by the exhibition’s curator María Elena Ortiz, who will give an overview of cordova’s practice framed by identity, Miami’s context, and the exhibition. Leslie Hewitt, artist and longtime collaborator, will contribute an interview with cordova. Jeff Chang, cultural critic, has agreed to provide a reflection of Miami’s Hip Hop culture in relation to a wider history of Hip Hop in the US. Candice Hopkins will provide an analysis of his sculptures and installations in connection to spirituality.

Sid Grossman May 25–October 28, 2018
Sid Grossman (b. 1913, New York; d. 1955, Provincetown, Massachusetts) was a founding member of the Photo League, a group of primarily Jewish photographers active in New York who used their medium to shed light on issues of social inequality in the urban environment. Grossman created humanizing and intimate documentary portraits of everyday people on the street and experimented with more artful, stylized image making as well.
Drawing from PAMM’s collection, this exhibition presents a series of photographs of New York—specifically the Lower East Side—depicting street scenes, tenements and architecture, and daily life. A selection of photographs produced while Grossman was stationed in Panama will also be presented along with additional works from a trip he took in the early 1940s to document life in the Dust Bowl. This exhibition focuses on Grossman’s overall body of work and his move between socially focused documentary photography to experimental approaches.

Liliana Porter: El hombre con el hacha y otras situaciones breves June 8, 2018–September 29, 2019
El hombre con el hacha y otras situaciones breves (2014/2017) is a large-scale installation by Argentine-born, New York-based artist Liliana Porter. Originally produced in 2014 and recently re-installed for the 2017 Venice Biennial, this piece has been recently acquired by PAMM. Spread across multiple stages made up of white bases of varying levels, the installation presents numerous vignettes involving figures, toys, broken furniture, and other textured materials and objects. The dramatic range of scales of these elements, from the miniscule to the gigantic, play with perspectives and the viewer’s perceptions in unusual ways. The title of the piece “The man with the axe and other brief situations,” refers to a tiny plastic figurine of a man wielding an axe that is positioned prominently near the front-center of the installation. In the scene, his tiny axe appears to have created a deep cut in the white ground and large pile of broken materials. This “brief situation,” is one of many that appears in the installation, creating a landscape of mini-narrative scenes across this expansive white stage-structure.
Liliana Porter is a pivotal artist within the history of Conceptual Art in Argentina and since the 1960s has been making work in diverse media that deconstruct our understanding of how representation functions. She began as a print-maker and was a founding member of the experimental New York Graphic workshop (1964–70). Expanding around notions of the multiple, her practice has included prints, photographs, assemblages, installations, films, and recently several theater productions. Known for her work with toys and other found-objects taken from popular culture and domestic contexts, Porter’s works engage humor and playful situations to ask grand philosophical questions about language and our search for purpose and meaning.

Felice Grodin: Invasive Species December 5, 2017–April 21, 2018
Felice Grodin: Invasive Species is a virtually interactive, digital exhibition of commissioned works by Miami-based artist Felice Grodin. The series employs the immersive technology of augmented reality (AR), and is accessible to visitors using iOS devices in PAMM’s outdoor areas and in the Padma and Raj Vattikuti Learning Theater on the museum’s first floor. This AR project is made possible thanks to a generous grant from the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation.
Influenced by geophilosophy—a field of thought shaped by Gilles Deleuze and Félix Guattari that analyzes the relationship between physical and mental territories—Grodin draws on her training as an architect to explore the mutable within landscape, architecture, and her urban surroundings. Felice Grodin: Invasive Species interacts with PAMM’s architecture, evolving and transforming the museum’s environment for the duration of the exhibition.
Featuring a total of four digital works, the show launches with two AR site-specific works—Mezzbug and Terrafish (both 2017)—that engage with and virtually enhance the museum’s building. In Terrafish, Grodin overlaps PAMM’s hanging gardens on the waterfront terrace with the translucent body of a digital species she created, which is suggestive of nonnative jellyfish found in South Florida waters. By drawing on the destructive impact of invasive species and creating a new digital environment, Grodin highlights the transformative and unstable state of our ecosystem, speculating about a not-so-distant future affected by climate change and overtaken by uncanny creatures.

Dara Friedman: Perfect Stranger November 3, 2017–March 4, 2018
PAMM presents the first major career survey of the work of Dara Friedman (b. 1968, Bad Kreuznach, Germany; lives in Miami). Friedman is best known for film and video installations that combine the techniques and principles of Structural filmmaking with a strong emotional charge and an intuitive approach to subject matter. Her work unravels cinematic conventions, laying bare the materiality and mechanics of film production while harnessing the accidents that occur as light passes through lens and celluloid. The results strip away and demystify film’s illusionistic tendencies, distilling uncanny fragments from the everyday world and transforming them into the raw material for sensual—often euphoric—encounters. Spanning more than 20 years of creative production, this immersive exhibition is Friedman’s first mid-career survey, and the largest presentation of her work to date. The exhibition is accompanied by a full-color, bilingual catalogue.
Dara Friedman: Perfect Stranger is organized by PAMM Curator René Morales and presented by Citi with generous support from the Andy Warhol Foundation for the Visual Arts and the National Endowment for the Arts. Steve McQueen: End Credits November 17, 2017–March 11, 2018
Steve McQueen (b. 1969, London; lives in Amsterdam and London) is a film director, producer, screenwriter, and video artist whose work focuses on historical narratives, politics, race, and other themes concerning a deep social consciousness. In the video installation End Credits, McQueen pays homage to the African American singer, actor, and Civil Rights activist Paul Robeson (1898–1976). An anti-imperialist committed to fighting inequality, Robeson was watched in the 1950s and blacklisted by the FBI—a government organization that kept an extensive archive on the Civil Rights leader and mass media performer. During the McCarthy era, the FBI compiled thousands of pages on Robeson, now a public archive which McQueen used to create End Credits. This work shows the significantly censored pages read by male and female voices. McQueen creates a compelling visual composition that brings forth the perverse nature of politically driven discrimination and persecution.

On the Horizon: Contemporary Cuban Art from the Jorge M. Pérez Collection Chapter 3: Domestic Anxieties: January 19–April 8, 2018
Pérez Art Museum Miami (PAMM) presents On the Horizon: Contemporary Cuban Art from the Jorge M. Pérez Collection, an exhibition of over 170 works of art, spanning painting, drawing, photography, mixed-media and sculpture. The exhibition—PAMM’s largest dedicated Cuban art exhibition to date—is presented in three parts over the course of a year, and features a rich panorama of recent work produced by artists living both in Cuba and abroad. On the Horizon celebrates the recent generous gift of Cuban artworks donated to the museum by Jorge M. Pérez in December 2016, and includes a significant number of recent acquisitions purchased during the last year with funds provided as part of Pérez’s donation.
The selection includes multiple images of the horizon, and these works serve to structure the conceptual framework of the exhibition. The diverse meanings placed on the horizon—which include it as a symbol of longing, containment, or desire—radiate across the additional works on view. Produced in various media, such as painting, sculpture, drawing, video, and installation, these contemplative artworks help generate a discussion regarding the specificities of Cuba’s current physical, social, and political environment, as revealed through each artist’s personal experience and unique aesthetics.

from the truer world of the other: Typewriter Art from the PAMM Collection November 17, 2017–April 29, 2018
This exhibition presents a selection of works acquired from the Sackner Archive of Concrete and Visual Poetry through a combined gift and purchase made possible by the generosity of the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation, Ruth and Marvin A. Sackner, and the Sackner Family Partnership. Featuring the work of approximately 15 individuals—including Carl Andre, Henri Chopin, Dom Sylvester Houédard, d. a. levy, Françoise Mairey, and Gustave Morin—the exhibition explores how artists and poets have transformed the typewriter, a machine for mundane office work, into a tool for experimental artistic and poetic expression. Harnessing the machine’s inherent precision while defying its physical limits, these artists create a dizzying array of optical effects and novel forms of geometric abstraction.

Haroon Mizra: A C I D G E S T July 21, 2017–July 29, 2018
Haroon Mirza (b. 1977, London; lives in London) is a multimedia artist who works with audiovisual materials, electronic equipment, amplifiers, and found objects to create immersive environments and kinetic sculptures. His work amplifies phenomena that are often imperceptible––such as electricity––and seeks to create or distort the relationship between optics and acoustics, giving unexpected visual and sensorial analogs to what we hear. Mirza uses a particular visual and material vocabulary to modify architectural spaces, including colored neon and sculptural acoustic foam, creating installations that offer a precise, highly mediated experience of sound and light.
PAMM has commissioned Mirza to produce a new work for its double-height gallery. For this project,
A C I D G E S T, Mizra created a specialized technical system that transmits an electrical current through speakers and light-emitting diodes (LEDs) that act in coordination with one another so that different colors are activated by corresponding noise frequencies. This system produces a choreographed experience of sound and light based on a concrete poem the artist has created, which serves as a score for a dynamic installation that redefines our phenomenological experience of the space.

MIAMI – March 19, 2018 – On Saturday, March 17, 2018, Pérez Art Museum Miami (PAMM) welcomed more than 900 cultural philanthropists, artists, civic leaders, and arts supporters to its fourth annual PAMM Art of the Party presented by Valentino, the museum’s largest fundraiser event of the year. The event, which honored one of today’s leading contemporary artists Teresita Fernández and philanthropist Patricia M. Papper, raised more than $1.3 million. All funds will directly support the museum’s robust arts education program, the largest program of its kind outside the Miami-Dade County school system.
The evening program commenced with a cocktail reception in celebration of the honorees, followed by one of three exclusive guest experiences conceptualized by Lee Brian Schrager with culinary collaborations by STARR Catering Group and Chef Michelle Bernstein, and wines generously provided by Kim Crawford.
At Chef’s Table, PAMM Director Franklin Sirmans celebrated acclaimed contemporary artist Teresita Fernández, who is admired for public sculptures and installations that allude to studies of perception, landscape, and minimalism. Several of her works belong to PAMM’s collection, including Fire (America) 5 (2017), which is currently on view as part of On the Horizon: Contemporary Cuban Art from the Jorge M. Pérez Collection. The evening also celebrated arts advocate and philanthropist Patricia M. Papper, who was a founding member of the museum in 1983 and was a member of its board of trustees, serving as president of the board for a decade. Throughout the years, Papper has supported many exhibitions at PAMM such as Basquiat: The Unknown Notebooks, donated works of art and acquisition funds, participated in several committees, and been a part of major fundraising events such as the gala and Corporate Luncheon.
Following Chef’s Table, guests were treated to a one-of-a-kind al fresco dining experience at the Supper Club dinner lounge on the museum’s picturesque East Portico. Partygoers enjoyed spectacular live entertainment presented by Faena, including music by DJ Funky Therapy, as well as tango, juggling, and contortionist performances.
The evening events culminated with the Supper Club dinner lounge transforming into the Remix after-party dance club, where guests enjoyed music by DJ Fabian Giannattasio, cocktails, and decadent desserts under the stars.
Bringing together cultural philanthropists, artists, civic leaders, and arts supporters, the evening showcased the best of Miami as well as the world-class museum’s unique architecture and position as Miami’s flagship art museum.

MIAMI – March 22, 2018 – Today, Pérez Art Museum Miami (PAMM) announced the launch of the PAMM Student Pass, in partnership with Miami-Dade County Public Schools (M-DCPS), which grants free admission to the museum for all M-DCPS Pre-K - 12th grade students.
Schools Superintendent Alberto M. Carvalho and PAMM Director Franklin Sirmans made the historic announcement at a news conference and explained that the Student Pass holders may also bring one adult guest for free with them.
“Education is at the core of what we do and we try to make that a part of every single thing that we do. We call ourselves a 21st century museum because we believe that 21st century museums are dynamic spaces and here to be a part of conversations that are important to our community. It begins with our thought-provoking exhibitions and arts education programs,” said Sirmans.
"I believe strongly that early exposure to art not only opens a child's heart and mind to creativity and ingenuity, but also sharpens critical thinking and other skills that help students learn content across the educational disciplines," said Carvalho.
During the morning announcement, Adler Guerrier, a Haitian-born, Miami-based artist, who graduated from M-DCPS Design and Architecture Senior High (DASH) and who is a PAMM permanent collection artist, also spoke about the importance of an arts education in a young person’s life. Special guests in attendance included PAMM trustees, Miami-Dade School Board members, art teachers as well as students from South Miami K-8 Center, who were led on a tour of the museum by PAMM’s talented teaching artists after the news conference.
To enroll in the program, students should follow the PAMM Student Pass link in the student and/or parent portal located at dadeschools.net, complete and print the online form, and then bring it to the museum. PAMM Student Pass applications also will be available at the museum’s front desk during regular museum hours. A pass card will be provided to the student at the time of the first visit.
PAMM Student Passes expire on August 31st each year. Beginning September 1st, students may re-enroll as long as they are still attending a Miami-Dade County public school.
As the flagship museum for Miami-Dade County for almost 35 years, PAMM believes art has the power to enrich the lives of all people, and is an integral part of the development of all students.
